Pro Bono Publico: Using Our Skills in Service

Pro bono publico (usually shortened to pro bono) is a phrase derived from Latin, meaning “for the public good.” The term is used to describe professional work undertaken voluntarily and without payment as a public service. Pro bono service, unlike traditional volunteerism, uses the specific skills of professionals to provide services to those who are unable to afford them.

Stepping away from our regular B2B marketing clients, MLT Creative has contributed our ideas and creativity in the form of design and marketing services to a number of Atlanta area organizations.

Genesis-A New LifeGenesis Shelter, which provides support to homeless infants and their families, is a long-time recipient of MLT Creative’s pro bono activities. Our president, Billy Mitchell, has held a board of directors’ position for almost a decade, providing hands-on input to all facets of the organization’s operations. Billy has passed on his passion for the shelter to other staff at our Atlanta ad agency. Over the years we have donated our ideas to Genesis Shelter in the form of several fundraising campaigns, collateral, and direct mail.

Just in time for holiday donations, we’re proud to announce the launch of  the updated Genesis Web site. This Web site has simplified editing functions that permit the staff at Genesis to maintain it without relying on costly outside resources. With an uncomplicated payment interface, Genesis can also receive donations via credit cards and checks. These accomplishments parallel Genesis’ goals for its resident families: independence and resourcefulness.

Development director Maryum Howell, the Genesis staff and volunteers are thrilled about the new site. They’ve already begun receiving donations to continue maintaining and building their worthwhile program of supporting homeless families in Atlanta. As you can imagine, the current state of economic affairs has impacted Genesis. The shelter is at capacity with more than 50 families on the waiting list.

Although the work is “for the public good,” it is with a sense of personal pride and willingness to support these causes that we continue to provide the creative gifts we possess to in service to others.
